Laila Goodridge will represent the United Conservative Party (UCP) in the by-election for the Fort McMurray-Conklin riding.

The seat has been empty since the beginning of March when former UCP MLA, Brian Jean stepped down to focus on his family and rebuild.

Goodridge was born and raised in Fort McMurray.

“I am so excited I won the nomination, I have been working on campaigns in town for over 15 years now and it is quite the honour to represent the community and United Conservative Party going forward.”

While campaigning for the by-election Goodridge said she knocked on over 2500 doors.

“The biggest issue I heard at the doors was the dislike of the carbon tax and how important it was to get pipelines through,” she added.

In a press release, UCP Leader Jason Kenney congratulated Goodridge on her win.

“I am thrilled at the prospect of having another strong, talented woman like Laila join our United Conservative team. We need voices like hers at the caucus table and in the Legislature, fighting for pragmatic, common sense solutions to the issues that really matter to Albertans,” said Kenney.

I have no doubt that the people of Fort McMurray-Conklin will be well served with Laila as their representative in the Legislature,” said Kenney.

Goodridge said she will hit the ground running Monday morning with her campaign efforts.

No date for the by-election has been announced, but Premier Rachel Notley has to call one within six months of Jean’s resignation.
