The Doug Barnes Cabin is getting a much needed $3.3-million expansion thanks to a government funded grant.

Operated by the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo and Ptarmigan Nordic Ski Club the cabin is conveniently located at the head of the Birchwood Trails.  The cabin has served as the hub for winter adventures in Fort McMurray since 1977.

“Doug Barnes Cabin is a well-loved community treasure,” said Mayor Don Scott. “This project will ensure that the facility is not only better able to serve the recreational needs of community groups but will open up new opportunities for all residents.”

Chris Reitz, president of the Ski Club told MyMcMurray that they have outgrown the current cabin

“Our membership peaked at 450 members somewhere around 2014,” said Reitz.

Renovations were supposed to start in 2016 but the wildfire delayed the project.

The new facility will accommodate more people, provide more programming opportunities, have additional storage space and functionality while maintaining the historic buildings distinct culture.

Looking forward to those additional programs is Councilor Phil Meagher, who is known for his passion for skiing and the Birchwood Trails.

“We’re looking at probably having staff hired, so that people can come during the day, go out for a ski, and come back have a coffee or hot chocolate, warm up in a shelter. There is also talk about having yoga in here and weight training,” said Meagher.

Meagher also noted that the new facility could have the potential to produce future cross-country Olympic skiers like Fort McMurray native Graeme Killick.

Construction begins spring 2018 with the expansion set to open in January 2019.
