The McMurray Métis and Imperial have signed an agreement for more inclusive discussion around the company’s oilsands developments.

The long-term agreement will discuss potential impacts and mitigation around Imperial’s Kearl operation and the future Aspen oilsands project.

It will also provide more opportunities for consultation and environmental stewardship.

“Imperial and the McMurray Métis have many shared values and interests in Imperial’s activities in the oilsands region. This agreement will provide for a more inclusive approach between Imperial and the McMurray Métis to better understand how we can collaboratively develop those resources for the mutual benefit of both parties, in a respectful and responsible manner,” said Bryan Pickett, vice president of Production at Imperial.

The agreement also outlines the framework for economic benefit through community funding and business contracting opportunities.

President of the McMurray Métis, Gail Gallupe said this agreement will support their community in many different ways.

“2018 is the ‘Year of the McMurray Métis’ and this agreement will allow us to support cultural, language and traditional programming, hold the annual Elders Christmas Celebration and host our upcoming Metis Festival. Imperial and its employees must be commended for their drive and dedication in developing this agreement that shares our joint vision.”

The agreement was signed at the McMurray Métis Monthly Members Meeting on May 5.
