Tree Canada is providing community grants to people in the region for the second year as part of its #OperationReLeaf Fort McMurray program.
“Tree Canada is dedicated to supporting re-greening efforts in the RMWB,” said Michael Rosen, President of Tree Canada. “We believe these community grants will go a long way in helping residents re-plant after the 2016 Horse River Wildfire and will encourage all homeowners throughout the region to implement FireSmart practices in their own backyards.”
People living in the region, who wish to plant fire resistant trees on private property, are eligible to receive up to $3,000 in grant funding and community groups looking to purchase fire resistance trees to plant or give to homeowners are eligible to receive up to $10,000.
The grant is offered in partnership with FireSmart Canada to ensure all trees planted meet their guidelines.
“FireSmart Canada is thrilled to see the Tree Canada grant program continue in the RMWB this spring and summer,” said Laura Stewart, President, FireSmart Canada. “Research and science have taught us that the choices we make with landscaping materials on our properties have a tremendous impact on the vulnerability of our homes. We encourage residents to learn more about the FireSmart program and the simple steps they can take to reduce wildfire risks at home.”
A guide to FireSmart Landscaping can be found on the Municipality’s website. It details what types of trees should be planted and where. No trees may be planted on Municipal property under any circumstance except for municipally-sanctioned community planting days at designated areas.
The deadline to apply for the grant is June 8, 2018. Applications will be approved on a first come, first served basis.
