Syncrude Canada and Fort McKay First Nation have won an Emerald Award from the Alberta Emerald Foundation for their Beaver Creek Bison Project.

The oilsands company and First Nation was recognized on Tuesday night by the Alberta Emerald Foundation for their partnership and their commitment to reintroducing wood bison into the area.

In 1993, 30 wood bison were released onto reclaimed land from Syncrude’s mining operations to show how the land could support crops and large animals.

The project was initially supposed to be five years but 25 years later, there is now about 300 bison roaming 300 hectares of land.

École McTavish Junior High School also picked up to awards.

Eco Yolo, the student led environmental group won the youth category for their replanting work.

The school brought home the first Energy Efficiency Challenge Award for their solar greenhouse.
