$2m+ per year at stake with municipal census

The municipality could be out more than two million dollars a year if it can’t finish its census by September.

The Edmonton Journal reports that the province is working with the city to make sure its numbers will be accepted this year, unlike in 2010 when the whole census was rejected.

Right now, funding gets doled out based on the federal census, which shows about 65 thousand people in Wood Buffalo.

But the municipality has already counted 103 thousand people; including 39 thousand in work camps.

The downtown area has been the slowest to respond to the census.
