Aboriginal groups lose appeal on Jackpine expansion

Two aboriginal groups have lost their bid to block a ruling on the expansion of Shell’s Jackpine mine.

The Athabasca Chipewyan and Metis Nation had asked the Alberta Court of Appeal to force the board examining the expansion to rule on whether there had been enough consultation with them.

The board had said it’s the government’s job to decide how much aboriginal communities should be consulted.

The Appeal Court agreed, and the groups say that means nobody will be taking into consideration whether Shell consulted enough with aboriginal groups.

A band spokeswoman told the Canadian Press that the issue could be headed for the Supreme Court.
