Academics want government to impose moratorium on new oilsands projects and pipelines

Suncor, oilsands project

A group of Canadian and American academics wants Canada to call a moratorium on new oilsands projects and pipelines.

Co-Author Thomas Homer-Dixon of the University of Waterloo says it’s well known that energy sources need to change.

“Even the folks who would not agree with us, would probably agree that North America is facing an energy transition of some kind,” he continues, “that the world is changing, that over the next decade there’s going to be a move away from carbon-based fuels.”

Another co-Author Mark Jaccard says government is the only one who can provide a level playing field, that industry needs.

“We’re not saying industry do a moratorium, we’re saying government do a moratorium until you’re able to say ‘oh yeah, I guess we should really be looking at what the green house gas implications are when we expand oilsands and when we approve pipelines,’ and so-on, that enable the expansion of oilsands.”

The academics voiced their message in the science publication called ‘Nature’.
