ACFN files constitutional challenge

Athabasca-Chipewyan First Nation has filed a constitutional challenge of the proposed Jackpine oil sands mine expansion project.

It’s less than a month away from hearings on Shell Canada’s proposed project, and the band says that they have failed to consult them on the design.

It will be difficult for them to exercise their treaty rights to use the land for traditional activities if changes aren’t made.

This had happened before on Total’s Joslyn mine.

The French energy giant however,  signed a benefit agreement with them.

A spokesman with the band says that that won’t happen this this time, because the proposed land is in the middle of their traditional lands.
