ACFN withdrawing from oil sands monitoring program

The Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation says it’s withdrawing from the Joint Oil sands Monitoring Program.

That’s the federal and provincial program that was supposed to monitor environmental change in the oil sands region.

The ACFN says the program isn’t asking for any meaningful input from first nations and doesn’t deal with treaty rights problems.

A spokesman for the federal environment department says the program will still continue to work on mechanisms to incorporate advice from aboriginals.
