Public art piece to be installed on the MacDonald Drive causeway

A 20-foot art installation named Reflections on the River will be installed along the MacDonald Drive causeway. The piece and location were selected from public engagement sessions facilitated by the Public Art Committee and were approved by Council.

Representing the regions rich heritage, culture and people, the piece consists of a bronze figure made of weathered steel with projected lighting to symbolize a canoe on the water.

“This is an exciting step for the Wood Buffalo arts community and the Public Art Program,” said Mayor Don Scott. “Not only is Reflections on the River a beautiful piece, it’s also a symbol that showcases the spirit of our community. I look forward to visiting the site with my family and enjoying this new public art.”

To prepare the site for the installation and to address safety concerns for the Snye Water Aerodrome that were addressed at council about 20 trees will be relocated or removed to allow for a clear and safe path for floatplanes.

Construction is set to take place throughout the summer and is expected to be complete by the fall.
