Alberta Environment: Suncor pipe spill didn't endanger humans

Suncor, oilsands project

Last month’s Suncor oil sands pipeline spill didn’t put any people in danger, but the same can’t be said about some wildlife.

A report from Alberta Environment says undiluted samples from the pipe leak killed rainbow trout fingerlings that were exposed to it.

But the report says all toxins were diluted by the time they reached the Athabasca, and didn’t pose a threat to the health of humans.

On March 25, a frozen pipe broke and spilled process-affected water into an outfall pond.

The report found the trout in the test most likely were killed by naphthenic acids, which are naturally occuring chemicals in bitumen.
