API renews call for Keystone XL approval

The American Petroleum Institute is renewing its call for Barack Obama to approve the Keystone XL pipeline.

Executive vice president Martin Durbin says the 7 billion dollar project is exactly what the economy needs.

“We have an opportunity now to make sure that this particular crude oil is going to be processed in some of the cleanest, most efficient refineries in the world, here in the Untied states, creating jobs along the way, creating government revenue along the way,” he said.

API says exit polls it conducted after the presidential election showed 75 percent of people in favour of the project.

Durbin says the U.S. needs Canadian crude.

“The refineries have invested billions of dollars to be able to process these heavier types of crude,” he said. “This is an energy partnership that has been very strong with Canada and we will only benefit by strengthening it even further.”

Opponents of the project are marching in Washington on Sunday.

Durbin says the U.S. ought to lock up this supply long term.

“We should make sure that we’re going to control our own energy destiny,” he said, “and make sure we continue to have this strong partnership with Canada, while creating jobs, growing the economy, and generating revenue from the government, at a time when all of those things are desperately needed.”

The pipeline would take bitumen from this region down to U.S. refineries in Texas and along the gulf coast.
