Athabasca Oil Corporation says it’s getting close to starting a new kind of oil sands project.
The company did a field test on its thermal-assisted gravity drainage system, or TAGD.
The test showed that electric cables heating bitumen can bring it to the surface.
The system could drastically reduce the amount of water and overall cost needed for a project, compared to steam assisted gravity drainage.
The company says it’s looking for a joint venture partner for an oil sands project.
