AUDIO & RECAP: Whitecourt dominates MOB 6-2

AUDIO: MOB Head Coach Tom Keca discusses a 6-2 loss to Whitecourt on Jan. 16, 2016.

Another terrible start led to another loss by a wide margin for the Fort McMurray Oil Barons at the Casman Centre against the Whitecourt Wolverines Saturday night.

Bryson Traptow started the parade to a 7-2 Wolverines win just 31 seconds into the first period, a Joseph Nardi marker minutes later made it 2-0 for the Wolverines under five minutes into the first.

“It’s frustrating but this is a process, this isn’t something that we can snap our fingers and you know throw pixie dust on it and its going to be better right away,” said Oil Barons Head Coach Tom Keca on the ROCK 97.9 post-game show.

The Oil Barons were outshot 22-2 in the first frame as Forbes Ploszaj faced 49 shots through sixty minutes.

Will Conley cut the lead in half early in the second period but Whitecourt would respond with the first of four unanswered from Brody Valette who scored twice and a pair of ex-Oil Barons in Josh Bishop and Erik Pedersen.

Jackson McKinstry scored the MOB’s second goal tapping in his own rebound off a breakaway.

“Jackson McKinstry has been really good for us. He’s been a banger and crasher on the wing and he’s versatile enough to play up the middle and that’s what it’s going to take everybody has to do a little bit. I can’t ask one or two guys to pull everybody.”

The 19-year-old forward had a strong game with a pair of breakaways and a few grade ‘A’ scoring chances.

For the second night in a row the Oil Barons dressed just sixteen skaters, short one on both defence and offence.

“We made a decision here to go with what we have with the youth we’re going to be patient with them, they’re going to get an opportunity here and we’re going to work with them,” said Keca about a young group that’s going to get all the playing time in the world.

The Wolverines went one of four on the power-play while the MOB blanked on three opportunities.

Garrett Mason made 20 of 22 saves in a winning effort for Whitecourt.
