Burton first to enter by-election; Ault expected to declare

Local lawyer Christine Burton has become the first candidate to declare for the upcoming Wood Buffalo Council by-election.

Burton finished just short of winning a seat in the 2010 election, missing out by just over 300 votes.

“Since that time, I’ve added to the wealth of my experience and community advocacy,” she said, “and I think awareness of the issues, and certainly a chance to meet some of the people involved in solving those issues.”

She practices law in Fort McMurray and also heads up the Penhorwood Condo Association, while volunteering with several local groups.

She says one of her key issues is improving overall quality of life in the region.

“And that’s something that really, really inspires me,” she said. “Because, as a long-time resident, I’ve seen so many changes here, so the recent focus on really making this a community people can call home is really exciting.”

Suncor communications advisor and former radio host Tyran Ault is expected to join the race at a media conference tomorrow morning as well.
