Cab drivers plan September 6 strike

Cab drivers are threatening to strike again, to push for changes to the Vehicle for Hire bylaw.

The bylaw went into effect last October, and although negotiations led changes, they say there’s still more rewriting that needs to be done.

Abdihanan Hussein represents drivers on the municipality’s Taxi Advisory Committee and led drivers during last year’s strike. His latest fight is against a $3.00 fee Sun Taxi drivers pay for every fare they pick up at the airport.

“These drivers here are victimized by the city, the airport authority and by the owners. There’s so many drivers who have no benefits. They are Canadian and have less than foreign workers,” says Hussein.

Sun Taxi was awarded the contract just before the new airport terminal opened. Management didn’t want to comment on record, but said the fees are standard practice in Canadian cities so taxis could be the first in line.

Hussein is pushing for more changes to the bylaw and says drivers will strike on Sept. 6, 2014  if demands aren’t met.
