Canada's anti-spam law goes into effect July 1st

Canada’s new anti-spam law starts up July 1st.

Better Business Bureau’s Leah Brownridge says it means people and businesses have to get consent to be allowed to send out marketing communication or information.

“E-mail, text messaging, social media posts, that kind of thing,” she says, “also, the installation of computer programs and making sure that they are collecting data in an ethical way and not misusing that data.”

People who don’t follow the rule could be fined up to a million dollars, and businesses fines can be up to 10-million.

E-mails are being sent asking people for permission.
