Catholic School students to graduate at home

Graduation ceremonies for the grade 12 students at Fort McMurray’s Catholic Schools will be held at home, the overwhelming choice of the students who want to cross the stage and receive their diplomas in their own school.

“After consulting with our High School Administration, the choice is clear. Our goal is to have these ceremonies hosted at their respective schools. But due to the circumstances we face, we will be having these ceremonies in August,” said Fort McMurray Catholic Schools Superintendent George McGuigan

The board thanked the many schools province wide that have accepted their students for May and June and said they appreciate the many offers they’ve received to host graduation ceremonies elsewhere.

“To graduate at home was the overwhelming choice of our students. We’ve been in constant contact with our students, families, and staff. They wanted a graduation ceremony at home. We look forward to seeing us all together again in Fort McMurray later this summer,” said Holy Trinity High School Principal Lucy Moore.

“Our students want to cross the stage in their own school. We understand them wanting to have this lifetime milestone at home, we want it at home too. We are excited to have this day of celebration. It will be a day of prayer, togetherness, and healing for us all,” said Father Mercredi High School Principal Natasha MacArthur-Poole.

Students from Holy Trinity and Father Merc will both have their home ceremony in August, according to the school board.
