The Salvation Army is warning people about an alleged scammer going door-to-door, asking for donations.

The organization launched its Kettle Campaign this weekend, with a goal of reaching $190,000. But some of that money might not end up in the hands of those in need, after police contacted the group about a potential scammer. Police say a suspect was knocking on doors in the Signal Road area this morning.

Major Steven Hibbs says someone says the group does not collect donations this way. Seven kettles have been placed around town in Sobey’s – Thickwood, Extra Foods – Timberlea, Save On Foods – Timberlea, Superstore, Peter Pond Mall, WalMart, and Canadian Tire.

The yearly campaign is one the Salvation Army’s major fundraisers which helps run its programming throughout the year. The proceeds are distributed to those in need of rent assistance, utilities, prescriptions, bus passes and more.

The campaign runs until Dec. 24. The organization is looking for volunteers to fill 600 slots around town.
