It was a whirlwind 2015 for comedian Trent McClellan that included run ins with scorpions and tarantulas and was capped off with his own comedy special.

McClellan shot his special ‘Positive Vibes’ at the Martha Cohen Theatre in Calgary on May 29, 2015 in front of a sold out crowd.

The Corner Brook, Newfoundland native who now hails from Calgary said doing his own comedy special under his terms was the next progression in his comedic career and he couldn’t be happier with the end result.

“I finally felt like a comedian,” said McClellan. “You do the road, you do all the shows and then you get all that material ready and then you shoot something and it was a weird feeling after 13 years I really feel like I can wear this comedian jacket now.”

McClellan capped off 2015 by spending Christmas and New Year’s in Nicaragua and after having to deal with a scorpion in his room and a tarantula by the pool, he has some new material to try out when he hits the Keyano Theatre stage Saturday night in Fort McMurray.

“Day two, my wife gets out of the shower and I hear her scream and I go into the bathroom and there’s a black scorpion on the tile and she’s like what do we do?” laughed McClellan. “You’ll have to come to the show to hear the rest of the story.”

With the province going through hard times and oil still below $40 a barrel, sometimes people need an escape from the what’s going on around them and laughter during rough times can be the best medicine.

“I put this show on the calendar for 2016 and I was really apprehensive about it because I know people have been going through a rough time and then to see the turnout, it’s going to be soldout, the support in Fort McMurray has always been amazing but I was saying to a friend that I think it is one of those things where people do need that escape, I think people need to just get out and laugh.” said McClellan.

“I think it’s one of the purest senses of community when people can all get together in the same room and laugh at the same time, that’s the kind of energy that you can’t feel every single day.”

The last time the comedian was here, he picked on the the new shiny Fort McMurray International Airport. He wasn’t quite sure what his next target was but he said a lot can happen from the airport, to the hotel, to the show.

“I think I said, what do you call the old airport and someone said ‘the old airport’ and I said that’s a creative name,” laughed McClellan. “Stuff always happens though throughout the day so you kind of never really know right up until show time, it’s kind of one of those things where you’re like alright let’s go.”

McClellan will take the stage at 8:00 p.m. Saturday night at the Keyano Theatre.
