Kid's StuffThe Aurora Choir is moving up from the basement of the United Church and into the Boys and Girls Club for their 2010-2011 Season. Auditions are coming up soon. Children aged 7-18 are welcome to try out and details can be found on the choir’s website at www.AuroraYouthChoir.ca. This year Aurora is hoping to add a third ensemble for young children to their Viva and Concert programs and has added "children's" to its name to become the Aurora Children’s & Youth Choir. Auditions are scheduled for September 13th and can be booked by calling (780) 881-7876 or emailing aurorachoir@shaw.ca.

FamilyThe Boys and Girls Club and the Aurora Choir invite local children and youth to take part in “Aurora Idol” on Friday, September 10th from 7pm to 9pm at the Boys and Girls Club. Choose songs from thekaraokechannel.com or bring your own and prepare to sing your heart out!!! Signup and details are online at www.aurorayouthchoir.ca the cost for this event is a mere $2 and, don’t forget, parents will need to complete a basic permission and contact information form or will need to stay through the activity.

FundraisersOn September, 11, Longshots will be hosting the 2nd Annual Longshots Road Hockey challenge in support of “Kids Forever” which is an organization that helps families with medical costs that they wouldn’t be able to afford otherwise. Longshots is asking for $250 donations so your company name can have a 2’ by 4’ banner printed and placed along the boards on the day of the tournament, then after the games are through, the banner will be returned to your business for its own personal use. There will be a kick off party on September 10 which everyone is encouraged to attend. Anyone that is interested can contact lacey@longshots.ca by September 3rd for more banner information.

Kid's StuffRegistration for the 2010/2011 Girl Guide year will take place on Wednesday, September 8th from 6 to 8pm at the Public Library. S parks are aged 5 and 6 (K/Grade 1), Brownies are 7 and 8(Grade 2/3), Guides are 9-12 (Grade 4-6), Pathfinders are 12-15 (Grade 7-9) and Rangers are aged 15-18(Grade 10-12). Meetings are held at different areas of the city. For more information, e-mail northernlightsguiding@yahoo.ca.

Registration fees are $125 for the year plus the option of pay weekly dues ($1 per week) for the year in advance which is approximately $35.

Remember, this isn’t just for kids because new leaders are needed and welcome!!

Community EventAs part of the 25th anniversary at Keyano College, the ASDC and Be Fit For Life Centre will be hosting 2010 Husky Hustle on September 25!
This special event will start at Corless field and will offer three distances to accommodate everyone! There is a 1k race for families and friends, or those who want a short track and fast time. For those looking to maybe walk or jog, try the 3k race. And for anyone looking for a good run, try the 5k event... our longest race in the competition!
We have prizes for all ages in each category, face painting and activities for the kids, there will be lots of snacks, juice, water and other goodies for racers and the first 100 to register get a Husky Hustle shirt for the kids.
The cost is $31.50 for the race, a t-shirt and an ASDC membership or $15.00 for a single entry race only and $10 for a group of 5 or more race only.

Community NewsIssue #4 of NorthWord will be published in Fall of 2010. We are looking for short stories or excerpts from current projects, fiction, or non-fictino (3000 word maximum), verse of no more than 50 lines, along with anything surprising, original, evocative, or interessting. If it can be published, we're interested. Your work does not necessarily have to be about the north, but preference will be given to those that are.

The deadline for submissions is October 31, 2010.
