Company can face charges in oilsands deaths

The Alberta Court of Appeal says a chinese company can face trial on safety charges in the deaths of two oilsands workers in 2007.

Sinopec Shanghai Engineering had argued it had no legal presence in Canada and was never properly served with legal documents.

But the court says the company can face trial after the workers were killed in a storage tank collapse at CNRL’s Horizon project.

The court also says the Crown can charge the company under the Criminal Code, not just the Health and Safety Act, if Sinopec doesn’t show up in court.
