A customer at a convenience store ended up stopping an armed robbery early Sunday morning.

Police say a 21 year old man tried to rob two Mac’s stores in Thickwood; one on Real Martin Drive and then another on Signal Road.

On his second try, police say a customer at the store grabbed the man and restrained him until police got there.

It turned out the gun he was using was a fake.

Michael Hector-Schneider of Fort McMurray has been charged with robbery, assault, and other crimes.

Wood Buffalo RCMP say they want to recognize the heroic acts of the bystander; but they’re not releasing any details about who he or she was.
