Council approves library name change

Council’s approved changing the Fort McMurray Public Library’s name to Wood Buffalo Regional Library.

The re-branding will take place next year, which is also the library’s 50th anniversary.

Chairwoman Cynthia O’Donnell says the Board voted last April to change the name to reflevt its mission and values.

She says nearly 60% of the library’s circulation comes from borrowers north of the bridge.

O’Donnell says they’ll approach council again this year with a consideration plan to address the shift in population and prepare for the regions future growth.

The library already does programming visits in Fort Chipewyan, Anzac, Janvier, and Fort McKay.

It says it’s partnered with the Regional Rec Corp to service Anzac’s new recreation centre and it’s also working with Keyano College’s location in Fort Chip.

Another project the library’s taken on is to turn a bus chassis into a travelling library that can go to places where there’s no branch.
