Council approves Mac Island Corp. transition and Sakitawaw Trail rezoning

After a 7-week summer break council is back in action.

It unanimously approved the transition of the MacDonald Island Park Corporation into the Regional Recreation Corporation of Wood Buffalo.

Mayor Melissa Blake says this Corporation will be there to oversee all of the region’s projects.

“That means all the way from Conklin to Fort Chipewyan in the north and everything in between, whether it happens to be a capital build for meeting recreational needs or it’s operational facilities, we want to tie it up under one structure,” says Blake.

MacDonald Island Park COO Tim Reid says it means the process of planning for projects all across the municipality is streamlined.

“The big change means that our board of directors and the folks that I work for right now, as well as the rest of Mi Team now report directly to the Regional Recreation Corporation and not directly to council.”

Last night, council also passed an amendment to rezone land on the Sakitawaw Trail which holds the Fort McMurray Métis Local community centre.

It also has an old youth detention centre, that the city plans to turn into a new medical clinic.

GM of the Métis Local Kyle Harrietha says he supports council, but wants officials to consult with the community about future use.

“Any future development on this site could have a serious negative impact on the Metis community of Fort McMurray,” he continues, “and we implore Councillors, RMWB administration and Government of Alberta officials to consult with us well in advance of any possible changes to the future use of this site.”

The clinic would also have counselling and rehab facilities.
