Council voting on MacDonald Island parking strategy

Council says it would support a traffic study at MacDonald Island Park that could lead to an increase in parking spots. The proposal was put forward by Councillor Tyran Ault on Tuesday night. He says adding more amenities is making it a necessity.

“When we were starting the construction for the softball diamonds at MacDonald Island Park, people were coming up and saying ‘hey great job for adding more parking.’ We actually had to back up and say, ‘no, we’re actually adding more stuff to the island.'”

Ault says a parkade would help with large events such as trade shows and concerts, but Councillor Sheldon Germain says parking is becoming an issue on just any old weekend.

“The item that’s really killing us in parking at MacDonald Island is multiple small events. Because we do a pretty good job like at the Northern Classic, the KISS concerts, for taking people on and off. But it’s those compiled events that we need to look at the parking,” said Germain.

Council will officially vote on the proposal at its next meeting. Once Shell Place opens, just over 1300 stalls will be available.

The Regional Recreation Corporation is giving people a heads up on parking issues fir this weekend. The Sustainival green carnival is being hosted from Friday to Monday. The Plain White T’s concert is on Saturday night, along with regularly scheduled activities at the rec centre and golf course.

Just like last year, 200 parking spots will be reserved for ONE Pass holders. The RRC suggests either carpooling or hopping on the #99 transit bus.
