UPDATE: Bill approved that will crack down on thefts of oil and gas equipment

UPDATE April 10th, 2013:

The third reading of this bill was passed Tuesday evening.

It was Bill 201 sponsored by MLA for Strathcona-Sherwood Park Dave Quest.

It will force those trying to unload materials to a scrap metal dealer or recycler to provide proper identification.

BACKGROUND STORY:

Next week a private member bill could be introduced in legislature, that’s aimed at cracking down on thefts of equipment used to explore for oil and gas.

The Globe and Mail reports it would make people prove to scrapyards they’re the rightful owner of items they’re trying to sell.

Mark Selkeld is the President of the Petroleum Services Association of Canada.

He says the thefts are a serious and expensive problem.

“It’s an on-going problem and has been for a number of years.”

Next week, 67-year old Harold Slaferek will be in a Fort McMurray court room.

He’s accused of stealing 58 rig mats worth over $260,000.
