An out-of-control wildfire near Grassland prompted homes to be evacuated, and the temporary closure of Highway 63 yesterday.

The fire started around 2:30 yesterday afternoon, and within hours, was up to 700 hectares in size. One home is reported to have been destroyed.

Fire crews, helicopters, and air tankers were called to help fight the fire. The AMA is reporting that Highway 63 has re-opened.

Wildfire information officer Geoffrey Driscoll says a majority of fires that happen this time of year are caused by humans, and are preventable.
