Crude chemicals causing fish deformities

Deformed fish in the Athabasca River downstream from the oil sands are very similar to fish found after oil spills.

University of Alberta ecologist Dr. David Schindler says they’re similar with fish found after the Exxon Valdez oil spill in Alaska, and Florida’s Deepwater Horizon disaster.

He says it could be caused by chemicals found in crude oil.

He wrote a letter to the Minister of Environment hoping to use the one-of-a-kind Experimental Lakes Area in Northern Ontario to do full ecosystem studies.

But it’s funding was cut in last year’s budget, and the Department of Fisheries is looking for a new operator.
