Dates, details announced for Western Canada Cup

The schedule for next year’s Western Canada Cup has been finalized.

The host Barons will kick off their tournament at 7:30 on Saturday April 25, against the team representing Manitoba.

AJHL Commisioner Ryan Bartoshyk says it’s going to be fun showcasing this league.

“I’m excited – I’m proud that this event’s in Fort McMurray. And I truly believe that when the building’s full for every game, it’s going to add to the event on and off the ice. And those athletes are going to be excited to be here, I’m looking forward to it,” he said.

As well, tickets for the tournament are going on sale as of Monday.

Packages will be available to Barons seat holders, with the general public sale happening on December 13.

They can be bought online, or at the Oil Barons box office.

CJHL President Kirk Lamb says the WCC will thrive in Fort McMurray.

“One of the huge draws for us in moving to this model was being able to place it in a community, get the community behind it early, build that excitment level up for the event. And I think it makes it that much better for the players as well, once they’re here,” he said.

One of the added perks will be the Safway Events Tent – which will feature musicians performing throughout the tournament.

As well, it will act as an overflow room for games that our sold out, featuring a video feed on multiple TV screens.

As well, the the Tournament is currently looking for volunteers.

Tournament President Scott Mundy says there are plenty of roles to choose from.

“A little bit of help with security, parking obviously is always a big struggle up here at the Oil Barons’ arena. Helping out with the teams, we need team liasons, people to just show the teams around town, so there’s a number of different ways people can help out.”
