David Bowie emerges with a new single

David Bowie has marked his 66th birthday by breaking years of silence and releasing his first new music in a decade.

The reclusive singer stepped back into the spotlight on Tuesday, the day of his birthday, to unveil a new single called Where Are We Now? and announce his upcoming album plans.

The song and its accompanying video has been released online and the new record, titled The Next Day, is due to hit stores in March.

A statement posted on Bowie’s newly revamped website, reads “January the 8th is of course David Bowie’s birthday, a timely moment for such a treasure to appear as if out of nowhere.

“Throwing shadows and avoiding the industry treadmill is very David Bowie despite his extraordinary track record that includes album sales in excess of 130 million… In recent years radio silence has been broken only by endless speculation, rumour and wishful thinking… After all, David is the kind of artist who writes and performs what he wants when he wants…  When he has something to say as opposed to something to sell. Today he definitely has something to say…

“Where Are We Now? was written by Bowie, and was recorded in New York… Now we all know… David Bowie has been in the recording studio… just when we least expected it!”

Bowie reportedly has no plans to conduct any interviews or play any live shows to promote his new music.

The Heroes hitmaker has not released an album since Reality in 2003 and his last live show was in 2006, while he has rarely been seen in public over the last few years.

He reportedly declined an invitation to perform at the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in London over the summer.
