Decision expected on Fort Hills mine

Go or no go is the question for the Fort Hills open-pit mine project.

The answer is expected for the $8-billion open pit mine sometime in the second half of this year.

Contractors have already started earthwork at the site about 90 kilometres north of the city.

If all goes as planned, its first phase would produce as much as 164,000 barrels a day in 2017.

It’s a joint venture between Suncor, Total E and P Canada and Teck Resources.

This comes about 3 weeks after the Voyageur Upgrader was cancelled because of low profit margins.
