Don't leave your child or pet in the car: RCMP

Consider this your official warning.

Pets and children shouldn’t be left alone in your vehicle now that the summer weather is here.

Temperatures inside vehicles climb very quickly, even on days where there is a breeze or skies overcast, leaving your windows down isn’t enough.

“It’s best to just leave our pets at home on a hot day a hot car can become a furnace in no time even with the windows open which can lead to fatal heart stroke,” said Tara Clarke, Executive Director Fort McMurray SPCA.

It’s best to bring your child with you wherever you go and to keep your pet at home.

There are legal consequences that can be imposed such as negligence, abandonment, and failing to provide the necessities of life.

The charges are from the Criminal Code of Canada for children and the Animal Protection Act and/or Criminal Code for pets.

If you see a child or pet alone in a car the RCMP wants you to call emergency services.
