Enbridge adds capacity to pipeline system for Surmont expansion

One pipeline company is gearing up for oil sands expansions.

Enbridge has signed an agreement to add 900,000 barrels of storage to it’s Cheecham terminal.

This will handle extra output from the phase 2 expansion at the Surmount SAG-D oil sands project.

It will cost $300-million and include 2 new 450,000-barrel blend tanks, and the conversion of an existing tank from blend to diluent.

Its start-up will be done in 2 phases at the end of next year and the beginning of 2015.

The Surmont expansion was started in 2010 with first production expected in 2015.

It’s a joint-venture with ConocoPhillips and Total E&P will bring production from 24-000 to 110,000 bpd.

Enbridge’s Athabasca and Waupisoo pipeline systems currently connect 6 producing oil sands projects, and by 2015 will connect 9.
