Enbridge battles environmentalists on shipping bitumen east

An effort by Enbridge to refine oil sands crude in Ontario and Quebec is running into environmentalist opposition.

Toronto-based group Environmental Defence released a report yesterday claiming oil sands crude causes three times as many pipeline spills as conventional oil.

Enbridge is arguing in front of the National Energy Board this week to try and get permission to reverse the flow of one of its pipelines to take oil sands crude to Ontario.

It’s also announced it’ll seek permission to reverse another line to take that oil from Ontario to Quebec refineries as well.

The Canadian Energy Pipeline Association says the U.S. Transportation department found oil sands crude doesn’t actually corrode pipelines more than regular crude like some groups claim.
