Expanding industry needs more workers

The way the oil sands industry is growing by 2022 there will be about 32,000 job openings.

According to the Petroleum Human Resources Council of Canada annual labour demand outlook, that’s an increase of 70-percent.

Half of those will be new jobs created because of expansion, while the rest is because of retirements and turnover.

It says jobs most in demand are power engineers, heavy equipment operators, heavy-duty equipment managers, facility operation and maintenance managers, and engineering managers.

In a release Executive Director Cheryl Knight says it’s going to be a challenge finding workers.

The report recommends trying to attract workers that have yet been in the industry, getting workers from beyond Western Canada, recruiting internationally trained workers, and informing people about the value of the industry.
