Family releases footage of FIFO worker to raise awareness about mental health

The family of a fly-in fly-out worker who killed himself, is trying to raise awareness about the mental health risks of the lifestyle.

Australian Rhys Connor suffered from depression and was interviewed for the country’s government-funded film on miners. The interview was done just days before he committed suicide.

“Have a good think about it, and money is not everything. That’s the way I look at it. If you’re not happy, then don’t even bother going,” he says.

The family released the footage this week, a year after the concreter and carpenter killed himself in his room at an Australian mine site camp.

“People have got to realize that everyone’s not okay sometimes,” said Connor in the interview.

Anyone facing similar issues in the region can call Some Other Solutions or the local branch of the Canadian Mental Health Association.
