Federal government on its way to missing emissions reduction target: audit

Canada’s environmental watchdog says the federal government will likely miss the target it set to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2020.

An environmental audit released today says regulations to limit carbon dioxide from the oil and gas sector still haven’t been introduced.

Julie Gelfand, the new commissioner of the environment and sustainable development, penned the report. Her conclusions come two years after warnings from her predecessor.

The report says energy sector emissions are growing the fastest. Gefland recommends more integrated efforts to monitor the oilsands, with traditional ecologicla knowledge and the input of aboriginal stakeholders to properly understand cumulative impact.

The Harper government signed the Copenhagen Accord, which is a commitment to cut greenhouse gases by 2020, bringing them to 17 per cent below 2005 levels.
