The federal government is trying to shut down an investigation into oilsands pollution.
The Commission for Environmental Co-operation was responding to complaints that harmful chemicals were leaking from tailings ponds into freshwater sources.
But the government says there’s a case already in Alberta’s provincial courts, and wants the CEC to drop its investigation.
That case was brought forward by Fort McMurray citizens.
The CEC is a body that was created with the North American Free Trade Agreement, as an outlet for the three countries to address environmental issues.
