Federal Government taking ACFN to court over financial transparency

The Federal Government is taking the Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation to court over failure to comply with new financial transparency laws.

According to an article by the CBC, ACFN is just one of eight First Nations that Ottawa is taking to court over a failure to comply with the First Nations Financial Transparency Act.

Just 12 First Nations have failed to comply with the act, four of them are working with the Federal Government to meet the requirements. The law, passed a year ago forces First Nations to handover audited financial statements, along with salaries of the chief and council to the Federal Government which is then posted online.

ACFN is arguing that it shouldn’t have to submit the pay of its chief and council since its leadership is paid as the board of directors of Acden, a band owned business instead of federal funds.

MyMcMurray has made an interview request with ACFN.
