Federal government's budget includes billions in Alberta flood relief, reserve fund

The federal Conservatives have released the 2014 budget, which limits spending in response to a 2.9 billion dollar deficit.

Finance Minister Jim Flaherty says a balanced budget is right around the corner.

“As you know, it’s been a long road back from the great recession to a balanced budget. We’re not quite there yet, but we’re almost there,” he said.

Some of the spending included is $305 million to expand rural and northern broadband internet service, and $10 million on snowmobile trails.

It also includes a three billion dollar risk reserve fund that if left untouched, could balance the budget this year.

Alberta’s Finance Minister says he’s happy to see 2.8 billion dollars committed to Alberta flood relief.

Doug Horner says he’s also hoping for some more funding for infrastructure.

“We’re also a little curious about ‘Building Canada’ and where that’s headed, and the amount of money that went into a few bridges in Quebec and Ontario. And hopefully there’ll be some good positive messaging for oilsands and the infrastructure Albertans are looking for as well,” he said.

He says funding would help fund needed upgrades to highways, schools, and hospitals.
