Federal scientists unsure about Jackpine expansion

New documents obtained by the Canadian Press show there’s lots of concern from federal scientists about Shell’s Jackpine mine expansion.

Environment Canada and the Fisheries department have warned that Shell has lowballed the effects of growth before, that they’re concerned about containing pollutants in new tailings ponds, and about possible contamination of the Athabasca River.

The 100-thousand barrel per day expansion will start its environmental hearing this October, five years after it was first proposed.
