Local wildlife officers killed three times as many bears this past year as the year before.

145 black bears were killed – one of the highest counts in recent history.

Almost half were killed at oilsands camps after being attracted by food or garbage.

Environmentalists are blaming oil companies for not storing garbage properly.

But Sustainable Resource Development says it was a failure in the berry crop that made the bears look elsewhere for food.

A secret federal government memo calls the oilsands a significant environmental and financial risk to Alberta.

An Ottawa researcher obtained the document through access to information legislation this week, finding that bureaucrats are unconvinced that more focus on in-situ mining will address environmental issues.

It says that in-situ projects are accelerating emissions even faster, and that it’s far from clear that tailings ponds from pit mining can be successfully reclaimed.

It suggests that tailings ponds could cause permanent damage.

The memo was written just under a year ago ahead of a roundtable discussion with oil companies.

One of Canada’s most respected climate scientists says the oil sands won’t warm the planet nearly as much as some are claiming.

In a scientific journal, Dr. Andrew Weaver demonstrates that if all 170 billion barrels that the industry is targeting were hauled out of the ground, temperatures would go up between 2 and 5 one-hundredths of a degree.

By comparison, if the world’s accessible coal resources were burned, it would raise temperatures almost one full degree.

Weaver says he’s not giving a get out of jail free card to the industry; he says governments still have to look for ways to shift demand away from hydrocarbons.

European nations are preparing to vote this week on a directive that would single out crude from the oilsands as dirty oil, with a much higher carbon footprint than conventional oil.

Naturalists say the government’s environmental assessment agenda is putting Canadians’ health and safety at risk.

The warning comes in light of projects like Enbridge’s Northern Gateway pipeline that groups fear could be allowed to cut corners.

Environmental lawyer Stephen Hazell says the prime minister’s objectives have been clear for some time now, base on budget bills from the last couple of years.

Hazell says it’s not a partisan issue – adding one of the greenest government’s he’s ever seen was the Mulroney cabinet. He’s optimistic Ottawa will still change its perspective.

The Fort McMurray Oil Barons moved to #5 in the national rankings after finishing their regular season with a 4-1 win in Spruce Grove on Sunday afternoon.

It was the first regular season regulation win in Spruce Grove for the Oil Barons in more than four years.

Kevin Lacroix scored the winning goal in a three-goal second period that featured additional markers by Killian Hutt and Justin Rose, who finished the campaign with 38 goals.

Colton Parayko opened the scoring in the first period on a coast-to-coast rush.

It was only the third time all year that Spruce Grove has allowed 4 goals at its home rink; and the Oil Barons did it with seven players out of the lineup due to injury or suspension.

However, because the Oil Barons fell 3-2 to Drayton Valley on Friday night, the Saints had already clinched the division title and a first round playoff bye.

The MOB will take on Grande Prairie in a best of five series beginning Saturday night at the Casman Centre.

(Provided by RCMP)

On February 19, 2012, shortly before 6:00 pm, Wood Buffalo RCMP were dispatched to a motor vehicle collision on Secondary Highway 881, near Conklin, Alberta. Witness reports indicated that a southbound passenger van crossed the center line and struck a northbound car. The driver of the car, a 62 year-old male from the Smoky Lake area, was pronounced dead on the scene. The driver of the van, a 41 year-old female from Edmonton, and a male passenger, a 40 year-old from Conklin, were both transported via ambulance to the Northern Lights Regional Health Centre with non life threatening injuries.

The investigation is on-going, however preliminary reports indicate that snowy road conditions are believed to be a contributing factor in the collision. As a result of the collision the highway had been shut down for several hours. The RCMP are reminding motorists to be mindful of the ever-changing weather and road conditions when traveling during the winter months.

Terrace council opposed the project after the Union of BC Municipalities also voted against it last fall.

More than 60 first nations and aboriginal organizations in BC have signed a declaration opposing the plan.

One of the largest cities in northwestern British Columbia has officially joined the opposition to the Enbridge Northern Gateway project.

Councillors in Terrace voted 5-2 to oppose plans for construction of the $5.5-billion pipeline from the Edmonton-area to Kitimat, 60 kilometres south of Terrace, where a tanker port would be built to ship oil sands crude to Asia.

The Monday night vote ends years of fence-sitting by Terrace councillors, with one noting the pipeline and port are good for Ottawa and Alberta, but leave Terrace, Kitimat and the surrounding communities with few benefits and most of the risk.

The findings are from a new Harris-Decima poll for Big Brothers/Big Sisters that shows one-third of adults think the abuse they suffered had a long-lasting effect.

Despite a more visible presence in the media, president Bruce Macdonald says it’s too difficult to tell whether bullying has increased.

Eighty-five per cent of those polled believe providing children with an older volunteer mentor is an effective method to reduce bullying.

After 228 games played in the AJHL, Fort McMurray Oil Barons defenceman and alternate captain Brock Maschmeyer has his division I scholarship.

Maschmeyer has committed to the Northern Michigan University Wildcats of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA), based in Marquette, MI.

“The feeling inside, you can’t describe it,” he said. “Once you’ve played in the league for four years, it’s just “come on, I want this,” and when you get it, your heart just stops for that one second.”

“It’s a great feeling.”

Maschmeyer is one of the highest scoring defencemen in the league with 42 points in 57 games played.

He was recently named as one of four nominees for the top defenceman award in the AJHL.

The affable blueliner says settling the school issue will leave only the upcoming playoffs as a point of concern this year.

“It allows me to focus a lot more, just because that monkey’s right off my back,” he said. “Now I can breathe and play even better from now on.”

His commitment continues his family’s strong hockey lineage; his brother Bronson is an overage defenceman for the WHL’s Kamloops Blazers, his sister Emerance plays for the Lloydminster Bobcats and recently won gold at the world under-18s with Team Canada, and his older sister Brittany played division I hockey at St. Lawrence and Syracuse University.

NMU first expressed interest in the rearguard a month ago, and scouts were present at the final home weekend of the year.

“They saw what my brother could do, and they went and checked me out and I could do the exact same,” he said. “I know a few guys that went to the school like [ex-Oil Baron] Tyler Gron; things like that all added up, and them offering it just felt right.”

Maschmeyer has one year of junior eligibility left and could still return for a final season with the Oil Barons before heading south.

The Deloitte consulting firm says oil sands companies need to do more than just offer big money to solve the local labour shortage.

The Calgary Herald reports the major firm is recommending that companies collaborate in the same way they’ve been cooperating on reducing tailings ponds.

The firm says 52 thousand workers will be required in the oil sands in 2015; and companies need to cooperate first on transportation to improve productivity.

Energy Minister Ted Morton says the government will lobby the feds for more temporary foreign workers and try to lure unemployed U.S. tradespeople through NAFTA.

The RMWB is now looking forward to getting the City Centre Area Redevelopment Plan underway, as Wood Buffalo Council has passed the plan at last night’s meeting.

The redevelopment plan is for all of downtown, as well as Waterways. The area has been divided into four zones, which will all see changes to make for a vibrant community.

Carol Theberge, the executive director of community development, says one area of concern during stakeholder meetings was redeveloping the Snye area. When the municipality built the dyke in order to build MacDonald Drive, it changed the ecosystem of the Snye, and it’s turned into a fish hatchery.

Director of planning and development Samuel Alatorre says that with the redevelopment, they want to ensure people can easily access all of the amenities with public transit and possibly parking structures. That said, the municipality is not looking to increase bus fares, but they would be looking to increase service.

The Bylaw that will put the CCARP into effect will be before council this spring.

Royal LePage True North Realty has made a contribution to the Fort McMurray Family Crisis Society.

The real estate firm donated $44,500 to the FCS yesterday. The money was donated by the employees, all of whom gave money out of their own pocket from commission made on sales.

Director of Marketing, Communications, and Fund Development for the Family Crisis Society Paul McWilliams says they not only help the women and children who are abused, but they also help rehabilitate the offenders.

The Family Crisis Society is building a new shelter, so they are able to help more people. Each year, they have to turn away about 100 clients, because they don’t have the space for them.

The additional space will allow them to not only help abused women and their children, but also men who are the victims of domestic violence, as well as elderly couples who are the victims of elder abuse.

Country star picks up two trophies—and a standing O—for her song lashing out at her haters.

Revenge is a dish best served, uh, with two golden trophies?

Taylor Swift lashed out at critics with her bluegrass-y song “Mean”—and she earned two Grammys for it Sunday night (Feb. 13), one for Best Country Song, the other for Best Country Solo Performance.

Not only that, but Taylor performed the song, and put in the words Someday I’ll be singing this at the Grammys. . . . The crowd rewarded the performance with a standing ovation.

“It’s always going to mean the world to me, the idea of getting to go the Grammys,” Taylor said when she got her first trophy, before the televised part of the Grammys started.

“But this one means a lot to me. There’s really no feeling like writing a song about somebody who is really mean to you and someone who really hates you, and then winning a Grammy for it.”

Taylor also got to see her folk duo friends The Civil Wars—her partners on The Hunger Games soundtrack song “Safe & Sound”—pick up two trophies as well.

The Civil Wars got Grammys for Best Folk Album and Best Country Group/Duo Performance, beating out some of country’s top names for the second one.

She’s rolling in the Grammys!

Adele went six for six, collecting all of the awards for which she was nominated – including top honors for album, record and song of the year – at Sunday’s 54th Annual Grammy Awards.

As she tearfully accepted album of the year for 21, the British singer, 23, professed her gratitude. “It’s been the most life-changing year,” she said, wiping her eyes.

Led by hit singles “Someone Like You” (which was named best pop solo performance) and “Rolling in the Deep,” the album was inspired by “a rubbish relationship,” she joked on stage at L.A.’s Staples Center. She also offered a searing performance of “Rolling in the Deep” midway through the telecast, her first live public performance since being silenced by a hemorrhaged vocal chord last year.

Among Adele’s other wins: best pop vocal album and best short form music video.
Spreading the Wealth
Other big Grammy winners included Lady Antebellum, whose Own the Night was named best country album.

Rockers the Foo Fighters’s Grammy bounty included wins for best rock performance and best rock song (“Walk”), best rock album and best hard rock/metal performance.

In the pre-show ceremony, in which a majority of the awards were given out, Taylor Swift collected two Grammys in the country music categories and Kanye West earned three trophies, including best rap album (My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy). He and Jay-Z won best rap performance for “Otis” on the live show.

Indie singer-songwriter Bon Iver bested Nicki Minaj and others to win best new artist, and Chris Brown’s F.A.M.E. won best R&B album.

Canadians could soon be protected against a meningitis strain that’s believed to be responsible for the deaths of two BC teens last year.

Infectious disease specialist Dr Taj Jadavji says the American Medical Association has confirmed a Meningitis B vaccine is in the works, but it depends on how quickly the government approves it.

Meningitis B is often mistaken for the flu, and is responsible for 82 percent of cases in children, and 68 percent of cases in teens.

For the third straight year, the Wildrose Party tabled its own budget for the province. Leader Danielle Smith says Premier Alison Redford wants to raise taxes in the future, but not until after she wins a new mandate from voters.

Smith says the big difference between the Wildrose and Conservative budgets, is that the Wildrose’s budget is balanced. To drive home the point of uncontrolled spending, the party has also established its own Alberta deficit clock.

She adds that every second, the government is spending $115 more than it takes in.

Sloan says budgets can be set for this year, but since municipalities need to enter into long-term contracts for essential services, local governments are forced to run deficits while waiting for provincial funding.

Whitney Houston, who ruled as pop music’s queen until her majestic voice and regal image were ravaged by drug use, erratic behaviour and a tumultuous marriage to singer Bobby Brown, died Saturday. She was 48.

CLICK HERE for a live feed of Whitney Houston’s funeral.

Beverly Hills police Lt. Mark Rosen told reporters outside the Beverly Hilton that Houston was pronounced dead at 3:55 p.m. after being found in the bathtub of her room on the fourth floor of the hotel. Her body remained there and Beverly Hills detectives were investigating.

“There were no obvious signs of any criminal intent at this time,” Rosen said.

Houston’s publicist, Kristen Foster, said Saturday that the cause of her death was unknown.

Houston’s death came on the eve of music’s biggest night — the Grammy Awards. It’s a showcase where she once reigned, and her death was sure to cast a heavy pall on Sunday’s ceremony.

Her longtime mentor Clive Davis was to hold his annual concert and dinner Saturday, and a representative of the show said it would proceed.

Houston was supposed to appear at the gala, and Davis had told The Associated Press that she would perhaps perform: “It’s her favourite night of the year … (so) who knows by the end of the evening,” he said.

Houston had been at rehearsals for the show Thursday, coaching singers Brandy and Monica, according to a person who was at the event but was not authorized to speak publicly about it. The person said Houston looked disheveled, was sweating profusely and liquor and cigarettes could be smelled on her breath.

Rosen said police received a 911 call from hotel security about Houston at 3:43 p.m. Saturday, and paramedics were already at the hotel because of a Grammy party. Paramedics unsuccessfully tried to resuscitate the singer, the lieutenant said.

The Rev. Al Sharpton called for a national prayer Sunday morning during a service at Second Baptist Church in Los Angeles.

“The morning of the Grammys, the world should pause and pray for the memory of a gifted songbird,” Sharpton said in a written statement.

At her peak, Houston was the golden girl of the music industry. From the middle 1980s to the late 1990s, she was one of the world’s bestselling artists. She wowed audiences with effortless, powerful, and peerless vocals that were rooted in the black church but made palatable to the masses with a pop sheen.

Her success carried her beyond music to movies, where she starred in hits like “The Bodyguard” and “Waiting to Exhale.”

She had the perfect voice and the perfect image: a gorgeous singer who had sex appeal but was never overtly sexual, who maintained perfect poise.

She influenced a generation of younger singers, from Christina Aguilera to Mariah Carey, who when she first came out sounded so much like Houston that many thought it was Houston.

But by the end of her career, Houston became a stunning cautionary tale of the toll of drug use. Her album sales plummeted and the hits stopped coming; her once serene image was shattered by a wild demeanour and bizarre public appearances. She confessed to abusing cocaine, marijuana and pills, and her once pristine voice became raspy and hoarse, unable to hit the high notes as she had during her prime.

“The biggest devil is me. I’m either my best friend or my worst enemy,” Houston told ABC’s Diane Sawyer in an infamous 2002 interview with then-husband Brown by her side.

It was a tragic fall for a superstar who was one of the top-selling artists in pop music history, with more than 55 million records sold in the United States alone.

She seemed to be born into greatness. She was the daughter of gospel singer Cissy Houston, the cousin of 1960s pop diva Dionne Warwick and the goddaughter of Aretha Franklin.

Houston first started singing in the church as a child. In her teens, she sang backup for Chaka Khan, Jermaine Jackson and others, in addition to modeling. It was around that time when music mogul Clive Davis first heard Houston perform.

“The time that I first saw her singing in her mother’s act in a club … it was such a stunning impact,” Davis told “Good Morning America.”

“To hear this young girl breathe such fire into this song. I mean, it really sent the proverbial tingles up my spine,” he added.

Before long, the rest of the country would feel it, too. Houston made her album debut in 1985 with “Whitney Houston,” which sold millions and spawned hit after hit. “Saving All My Love for You” brought her her first Grammy, for best female pop vocal. “How Will I Know,” ”You Give Good Love” and “The Greatest Love of All” also became hit singles.

Another multiplatinum album, “Whitney,” came out in 1987 and included hits like “Where Do Broken Hearts Go” and “I Wanna Dance With Somebody.”

The New York Times wrote that Houston “possesses one of her generation’s most powerful gospel-trained voices, but she eschews many of the churchier mannerisms of her forerunners. She uses ornamental gospel phrasing only sparingly, and instead of projecting an earthy, tearful vulnerability, communicates cool self-assurance and strength, building pop ballads to majestic, sustained peaks of intensity.”

Her decision not to follow the more soulful inflections of singers like Franklin drew criticism by some who saw her as playing down her black roots to go pop and reach white audiences. The criticism would become a constant refrain through much of her career. She was even booed during the “Soul Train Awards” in 1989.

“Sometimes it gets down to that, you know?” she told Katie Couric in 1996. “You’re not black enough for them. I don’t know. You’re not R&B enough. You’re very pop. The white audience has taken you away from them.”

Some saw her 1992 marriage to former New Edition member and soul crooner Bobby Brown as an attempt to refute those critics. It seemed to be an odd union; she was seen as pop’s pure princess while he had a bad-boy image, and already had children of his own. (The couple had a daughter, Bobbi Kristina, in 1993.) Over the years, he would be arrested several times, on charges ranging from DUI to failure to pay child support.

But Houston said their true personalities were not as far apart as people may have believed.

“When you love, you love. I mean, do you stop loving somebody because you have different images? You know, Bobby and I basically come from the same place,” she told Rolling Stone in 1993. “You see somebody, and you deal with their image, that’s their image. It’s part of them, it’s not the whole picture. I am not always in a sequined gown. I am nobody’s angel. I can get down and dirty. I can get raunchy.”

It would take several years, however, for the public to see that side of Houston. Her moving 1991 rendition of “The Star Spangled Banner” at the Super Bowl, amid the first Gulf War, set a new standard and once again reaffirmed her as America’s sweetheart.

In 1992, she became a star in the acting world with “The Bodyguard.” Despite mixed reviews, the story of a singer (Houston) guarded by a former Secret Service agent (Kevin Costner) was an international success.

It also gave her perhaps her most memorable hit: a searing, stunning rendition of Dolly Parton’s “I Will Always Love You,” which sat atop the charts for weeks. It was Grammy’s record of the year and best female pop vocal, and the “Bodyguard” soundtrack was named album of the year.

She returned to the big screen in 1995-96 with “Waiting to Exhale” and “The Preacher’s Wife.” Both spawned soundtrack albums, and another hit studio album, “My Love Is Your Love,” in 1998, brought her a Grammy for best female R&B vocal for the cut “It’s Not Right But It’s Okay.”

But during these career and personal highs, Houston was using drugs. In an interview with Oprah Winfrey in 2010, she said by the time “The Preacher’s Wife” was released, “(doing drugs) was an everyday thing. … I would do my work, but after I did my work, for a whole year or two, it was every day. … I wasn’t happy by that point in time. I was losing myself.”

In the interview, Houston blamed her rocky marriage to Brown, which included a charge of domestic abuse against Brown in 1993. They divorced in 2007.

Houston would go to rehab twice before she would declare herself drug-free to Winfrey in 2010. But in the interim, there were missed concert dates, a stop at an airport due to drugs, and public meltdowns.

She was so startlingly thin during a 2001 Michael Jackson tribute concert that rumours spread she had died the next day. Her crude behaviour and jittery appearance on Brown’s reality show, “Being Bobby Brown,” was an example of her sad decline. Her Sawyer interview, where she declared “crack is whack,” was often parodied. She dropped out of the spotlight for a few years.

Houston staged what seemed to be a successful comeback with the 2009 album “I Look To You.” The album debuted on the top of the charts, and would eventually go platinum.

Things soon fell apart. A concert to promote the album on “Good Morning America” went awry as Houston’s voice sounded ragged and off-key. She blamed an interview with Winfrey for straining her voice.

A world tour launched overseas, however, only confirmed suspicions that Houston had lost her treasured gift, as she failed to hit notes and left many fans unimpressed; some walked out. Cancelled concert dates raised speculation that she may have been abusing drugs, but she denied those claims and said she was in great shape, blaming illness for cancellations.

Infrastructure minister Jeff Johnson says today’s budget is good for northern Alberta.

But he says the government’s commitment to northern development doesn’t stop with the budget.

“We’re going to be having a few other strategies coming forward in the coming days,” he said. “We announced the Transportation Coordinating Committee a few weeks ago, which the community and industry were asking for, and there’s going to be a land release strategy coming forward shortly as well.”

Johnson says Highway 63 remains a top issue.

“It’s still a big priority for the province,” he said. “We need to get that thing finished. There is a mention of Highway 63 in the business plans – possibly the opposition just didn’t look closely enough.”

He says Wood Buffalo can expect more land to be released very soon ahead of them finalizing the urban development sub region (UDSR) land bank.

“We’re going to see a bit of a two-phased approach to land releases,” he said. “One is, what can we do in the near-term, what kind of land parcels can we get on the market without the UDSR being in place?”

“And we’re hoping to come up and announce those very shortly.”

He also adds that infrastructure spending has been boosted by the latest budget, as has money for municipalities.

Fort McMurray’s public school district officials are singing the praises of today’s budget.

“This is a great day for K-12 education in the province of Alberta,” said Jeff Thompson, chairman of the Fort McMurray Public School District Board of Trustees. “The government has fulfilled its commitment to provide school boards with predictable and sustainable funding for the next three years. This is a bold step forward and ensures that boards maintain quality programming for students by having secure funding in education for the next three years.”

The budget brought total funding to $6.8-billion; up 3.5% from last year.

“While the budget has increased overall, there are some funding envelopes that have been dropped such as the Relative Cost of Purchasing grant,” said Superintendent Dennis Parsons. “That said, the Minister of Education has assured school boards that there is greater flexibility in this budget which will allow us to address our unique needs,”

Parsons added he is eager to review the government’s plans for increasing infrastructure capacity in areas such as Fort McMurray.

Fort McMurray–Wood Buffalo MLA Guy Boutilier says today’s provincial budget ignores Fort McMurray.

“This is a budget of all talk and no actions,” he said. “Not a mention of our area, not a mention of Highway 63 or our seniors, I actually think it’s maddening.”

“They’ve mentioned other communities like Grande Prairie, Edmonton, Calgary; not so much as a word about Fort McMurray–Wood Buffalo. They mention Bow Island, they mention Edson, but they forget to talk about where the economic revenue is coming from; and that’s our home in Fort McMurray.”

He says a Wildrose budget will be released tomorrow and differ greatly from what was released by the government today.

“Our budget is about listening to people,” Boutilier said. “Where the economic activity is coming from, first and foremost, infrastructure in areas where the dollars are being created should be first reinvested, so we can continue to feed the goose that is laying the golden egg.”

“Clearly this government believes that the goose should not be fed, and that is what they will pay the price on in the next election.”

WASHINGTON – Home-brewed coffee lovers, take note: close to a million Tassimo coffee makers are being recalled in Canada after reports of the brewers spraying hot liquid, coffee grounds or tea leaves onto people.

Some 900,000 Tassimo coffee makers are being recalled in Canada and about 835,000 are being recalled in the U.S.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission says there have been 140 reports of problems with the Tassimo single-cup brewers dousing people, including 37 cases involving second-degree burns.

In one incident, a 10-year-old girl from Minnesota was hospitalized with second-degree burns to her face and neck.

The commission also says the coffee maker’s “T-disc” — the plastic disc that holds the coffee or tea — can burst while brewing and spray hot liquid.

It says a 2-year-old girl in Canada suffered second-degree burns to her face.

Some four million packages of Tassimo espresso T-discs are also being recalled, and about half of those were sold in Canada.

They were manufactured by Kraft Foods Global Inc., in Illinois, and were recalled after 21 reports of problems.

The brewers were made by California-based BSH Home Appliances Corp. that carry the Bosch and Tassimo Professional brand names.

Consumers can contact the company at 1-866-918-8763 for more information or visit its website at http://www.tassimodirect.com

There’s a disagreement of population numbers for the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo.

The 2011 federal census says the population of Fort McMurray is just over 61,000 people, with more than 65 thousand residents in the entire region. The 2010 municipal census put Fort McMurray’s population at 77,000, a difference of about 20 percent.

Mayor Melissa Blake told the Edmonton Journal that the municipality has to extrapolate its total population. Statistics Canada does not extrapolate.

Wood Buffalo well outpaced the country in population growth, according to the first batch of numbers from the 2011 national census.

Statistics Canada says the municipality grew by more than 27 percent over the last five years; from just under 52 thousand people, to more than 65 and a half thousand people.

That’s a big difference from last year’s municipal census which said there were more than 66 thousand permanent residents.

But the growth rate still well outpaces the national rate, which was just under 6 percent, and the Alberta growth rate, which was almost 11 percent

The following has been provided by the RMWB

Regional Emergency Services’ Fire Prevention Branch Fire Investigators have made progress in the fire investigation at Parsons Landing, the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo announced today.

At this point the findings of the investigation are as follows:

•	This fire does not appear to be suspicious in nature.
•	The fire originated on the second floor, south facing balcony of the north wing.
•	The sprinkler systems worked on all four floors of the building.
•	The sprinkler systems were effective in stopping the spread of the fire on the first, second, and third floors. It is important to note that during a fire, only the sprinkler heads in direct proximity to the fire area are designed to activate.
•	Insufficient power supply caused some alarm bells in the building not to sound.

Fire Prevention Branch Fire Investigators continue to investigate the cause of the fire. Further details will be released when available.

For information related to specific units or belongings retrieval, residents affected by the fire are reminded to speak with Shelter Canadian Properties Limited property management company at 780-748-4355, as well as with their insurance company.

Evacuees still requiring support, such as shelter or food, can contact Neighbourhood and Community Development during regular business hours at 780-743-7940.

The market is right, mortgage rates are looking good, but that doesn’t mean people are planning on buying a house in Alberta.

Those were the findings from a survey for PricewaterhouseCoopers.

Ian Gunn says while many are not planning on making that investment this year, there is still a positive outlook when it comes to the economy.

“When there’s a good look for the economy, guess what, people will do some discretionary spending,” Gunn says. “Combined with interest rates still very low, it’s helpful from the standpoint that most people need to borrow to buy a home. Conditions are very strong.”

The Fort McMurray Public School board says Ecole McTavish will reopen on Tuesday morning, except for its fine arts wing.

The school has been closed since Sunday night when it was used as a temporary shelter for people evacuated during the Parsons Creek Landing fire.

The board says staff and students should enter through the front entrance while evacuees and emergency personnel should use the Fine Arts wing on the right hand side of the building.

“This area will be isolated from staff and students to allow us to get back to business as usual, and provide the needed privacy of those affected by this devastating fire,” said Dennis Parsons, Superintendent.

“We very much want to welcome our neighbours any way we can, while maintaining normalcy for our staff and students,” he added.

John Williamson says the recent decision by the United States to delay the Keystone XL pipeline is just one reason for his suggestion.

The Conservative MP who represents New Brunswick Southeast says getting Canadian oil to Saint John could renew talk of building a second Irving Oil refinery and create jobs.

Environmental groups are disappointed with the new oil sands environmental monitoring system.

That’s because bureaucrats will be monitoring the oilsands rather than an independent agency.

The NDP’s Megan Leslie says she doesn’t trust the government to do that.

“I think it’s a big PR move to counter the negative publicity they’ve gotten around the EU fuel directive, or the Keystone XL decision,” she said. “I think it’s a stunt.”

Greenpeace spokesman Mike Hudema says there are some big questions still unanswered.

“Is the plan going to be run by an independent body?” he asked. “Both the Alberta and federal governments have huge credibility issues when it comes to providing reliable data to the public.”

The government announced the new plan on Friday.

The Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers praised the announcement, saying it’s a transparent system that will help ensure responsible development.

The celebrity coach – along with Christina Aguilera, Cee Lo Green and Adam Levine – will be back in the rotating chairs for season 2′s blind auditions on Sunday night, following the Super Bowl.

During the blind auditions, the celebrity coaches will hear contestants sing without seeing what they look like. If they like what they hear, the coaches can push the button, turn their chair around and see the face behind the voice, selecting the singer for their team. So, there’s no guarantee that Blake will coach the aspiring country stars.

“I know anything can happen,” he says, “but I really believe in my heart that one of several country singers that we have on our show this year have a shot at winning the whole thing.”

The following has been provided by Wood Buffalo RCMP

Wood Buffalo RCMP are still on scene this morning at the site of a fire that broke out last night at Parson’s Creek Landing in the Timberlea area of Fort McMurray. Police were called to the structure fire at around 11:30 pm on February 5, 2012, to assist fire crews with scene containment as well as evacuations. Emergency Social Services for the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo were activated, and a number of other agencies such as Utility Companies, the SPCA and Victim Services, were on scene to assist. Thus far there have been no reports of casualties or injuries as a result of the fire. Although no dollar value has yet been set, the level of property damage is considered to be significant.

The fire appears to have been held to the north wing of Parson’s Creek Landing apartment complex, however residents from all three wings of the complex were evacuated as well as those residing in the neighbouring building; Laird’s Landing. Residents of Laird’s Landing have since been allowed to return to their homes. The evacuation will likely remain in effect for the next 24-48 hours as fire investigators and police continue to investigate and ensure the area is safe for re-entry. Evacuees have been directed to the temporary shelter set-up at Ecole McTavish School. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

The magazine had written a piece on the oil sands calling them “tar sands” and “dirty business.” Chief Economist with the Commerce, Ben Brunnen, says he wrote a letter last week to clarify some of the terms used in the article, and that letter has been posted.

He says by posting the letter, The Economist shows that it is listening, and the Chamber has valid concerns.

He says he is getting a little tired of coming to the defence of the oil sands, but recognizes it has to be done.
