FMPSD looking for ways to save money

The Fort McMurray Public School District is looking for ways on how to handle its projected 2012-13 deficit.

It will be hosting public meetings for input on what measures to consider.

The current deficit isn’t sustainable, and won’t last the next school year unless there is a planned intervention.

There will be four focused town hall meetings.

The two major topics –  the possible reconfiguration of schools and the community’s view on a compressed school week.

Grade reconfiguration would involve changing the grades contained in individual school.

For example, should the Public Board change a school like Ecole McTavish Junior High Public School from a junior high school that now serves students grades 7 – 9 to a school from grades 7 to 12?

In the release, it says “while this change, should it be approved, would satisfy the need for a public high school in Timberlea, it would have implications for other schools in the district such as Westwood Community High and possibly Composite High Schools.”

It is also considering a smaller school week, changing it from a 5 day school week to a 4 day school week.

This by no means is a new concept.

The release says, ” this change if adopted would bring significant changes for students, parents and staff.”

Therefore, the Board of Trustees  is looking to the community, so it can consider all perspectives before making the most informed decision.
