Four students from the Fort McMurray Public School District will be off to Montreal in May to take part in a national science fair.

The students will represent Wood Buffalo after participating in the ninth annual Wood Buffalo Regional Science Fair on Saturday at Shell Place.

The Wood Buffalo contingent will feature MacKenzie Guy, an Ecole McTavish Junior High School student along with Linda Guo, Drhumil Shah, and Dhvani Patel all three students at Westwood Community High School.

Guo, a grade 12 student is off to nationals for the second year in a row. Her project featured a hat for the visually impaired.

“My project seeks to provide greater versatility and affordability than traditional methods will allow,” said Guo. “In-Sight alerts the user to obstacles through detection by an ultrasonic sensor and communication through vibration motors and speakers.”

MacKenzie, who is in grade eight created a device that helps to decrease hot flashes, she even tested it on a human subject.

Patel created a drone for humanitarian purposes. “Basically I developed a drone smarter than current drones, which can help in disaster zones,” said the grade ten student. “It can be used to assist with humanitarian response at no additional cost.”

Shah, is also off to nationals for the second straight year, the tenth grader created a water pump system for desalination that is 900 per cent more efficient than current technology.

“My project is called ‘Optimizing a Novel Water Pump and Resonator System to Improve the Accessibility and Applicability of Water for Human Necessities.’ It feels great to be heading to the nationals again,” said Shah.

According to the FMPSD 27 of 29 special awards handed out during the regional fair went to Public School District students.
