Gateway leak chief defends safety record

The man in charge of leak detection on the proposed Northern Gateway pipeline says cost won’t be a factor in making sure the line is safe.

Barry Callele told the hearings on the pipeline that he’s under orders to build a world-class, industry-leading pipeline.

But he says even though zero spills is the objective, leaks still do happen.

A lawyer for the BC government asked about Enbridge’s recent spills in the Northwest Territories and Michigan.

But Callele says the company has changed since that last spill in 2010.
