The Fort McMurray Giants will play their first ever home game at Shell Place on Jun. 29, against the Regina Red Sox. After being displaced for a month due to the wildfire the Western Major Baseball League expansion franchise is ready to come home.

Club General Manager and Vice-President Dutche Iannetti confirmed the return of the 5-13 club with MyMcMurray late Tuesday morning.

“I am very excited for the Giants to come back and I can’t wait to bring that team back here and they can’t wait to come back to play in front of the families in Fort McMurray that have returned home,” said Iannetti. “We want to create some entertainment here in the community.”

The first series in Fort McMurray will start off against Regina at 5:05 p.m., it will continue with another game on Thursday, Jun. 30.

Canada Day will feature a double-header against Melville with the first game scheduled for 2:05 p.m., the second will be at 7:05 p.m.

“Canada Day will also be our first Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo Local Hero Day and all first responders, active and retired military personnel, municipal law enforcement and RCMP officers are welcome to attend the game for free with identification,” noted the press release.

With the club returning to Fort McMurray it has caused a shift in the Giants’ schedule for the remainder of the year, details can be found online.

“We are delighted to welcome the Giants home to the Baseball Stadium at Shell Place,” said Annette Antoniak, Chief Executive Officer of the Regional Recreation Corporation of Wood Buffalo. “Our entire team is excited and ready to host our home town baseball team, as well as fans from across the region as they enjoy baseball in our own community this summer.”

The WMBL franchise was supposed to start the season at Shell Place on May. 29, against the defending champion Lethbridge Bulls but has played its home games out of the Edmonton Ballpark, thanks to some gracious hospitality from the Edmonton Pirates.
