As Dave Williams continues to be treated for severe burns in an Edmonton hospital following the explosion last week at Nexen Long Lake a GoFundMe page has been set up to help his family with travel costs.

The realtor who sold Williams his home, Sheryl Scott, explained to MyMcMurray she has stayed in touch with Williams and his father, Mike, since then and now has received permission from Williams’ family to set up the account.

Scott said she wanted to help alleviate the stress of travel and accommodation costs as his family comes from Nova Scotia to be with Williams in Edmonton.

“I just had been watching and no one had done it yet and I know if it was me I would need the help. Most people would need the help,” she said. “When you have to stay someplace else, I just thought, they’ve got enough on their mind right now that let’s just, if we can, help them any bit with this so they can just concentrate on Dave.”

In the first hour the fund had already raised more than $1,500 of the $20,000 goal.

Williams, 30, is originally from Scotchtown in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, and that is where his family has travelled from to be with him while he fights for his life. He sustained third degree burns in the explosion at Nexen Long Lake that also claimed the life of Fort McMurray resident Drew Foster, 52. A GoFundMe page has also been created for Foster’s widow and children.

Nexen has suspended operations at Long Lake and declined an interview request from MyMcMurray Thursday to follow up on the incident.
