Gov't committee members making $1k a month despite not meeting

Members of a provincial government committee are getting paid a thousand dollars a month despite the fact the committee hasn’t met since 2008.

Scott Hennig with the Canadian Taxpayers Federation is calling on the Premier to scrap the Standing Committee on Privileges; or at least stop paying its 21 members.

“Just this year alone it’s going to cost taxpayers $261,000,” he says. “So probably over the three and a half years they haven’t met, we’re probably approaching close to a million bucks taxpayers have paid out for MLAs to do absolutely nothing.”

The Chairman of the committee told the Canadian Press that committee members need to be on standby in case they ever do need to meet.
